Dumbarton Castle guards the point where the River Leven joins the River Clyde. Its recorded history reaches back over 1,500 years and overlooks the Scottish town of Dumbarton, sitting on a plug of volcanic basalt known as Dumbarton Rock it measures at 240 feet (73 m) high.
The castle is open on a daily basis during the summer season and Saturday-Wednesday in the winter. Visitors must climb the 557 steps to see the White Tower Crag and other features taking in the magnificent panoramic views of the Clyde and Ben Lomond in the distance.
